Tidak mudah mempelajari mahluk hidup dengan tingkat keanekaragamannya sangat tinggi di muka bumi ini, bisa dibayangkan bagaimana seandainya tidak ada pengelompokan terhadap 2 juta lebih jenis mahluk hidup dengan nama yang berbeda-beda disetiap daerah? Hal inilah yang kemudian menuntut perlunya pengelompokkan atau klasifikasi pada mahluk hidup. 
 
Meskipun praktek pengelompokan mahluk hidup sudah lama dilakukan, namun sistem yang paling diterima dan masih digunakan hingga saat ini adalah model pengelompokan yang dikenalkan oleh  Carl Von Linne atau yang lebih dikenal dengan nama Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778).
 
Carolus Linnaeus merupakan seorang botani berkebangsaan Swedia yang mencetuskan dasar pengelompokan dengan mempertimbangkan persamaan struktur tubuh, baik luar maupun dalam, terlebih khusus berkaitan dengan alat reproduksinya, Carolus Linnaeus juga memberikan sistem penamaan pada mahluk hidup yang dikenal dengan sisstem binomial numenklatur. Atas jasanya yang sangat besar dalam pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan dibidang klasifikasi mahluk hidup, Carolus Linnaeus diberikan sebutan sebagai bapak taksonomi, cabang ilmu biologi yang mempelajari pengelompokan mahluk hidup
